Giving Support

Whether its infant, child, adult child, miscarriage, or pregnancy loss, the loss will be a tremendous challenge to the parent(s) . YOU need to be alert to it, attentive to it, and responsive to it: whether you are a health care practitioner treating these parents or whether you are family and friends.

A parent who has endured the unbearable loss is suddenly cast into a painful world that she/he is unfamiliar with. This isn't what she/he expected. Everything has turned upside down. If depression descends upon his/her weary soul, the loss and the pain WILL become deeper and darker.

Family members, friends, and the medical community should be aware of this potential impact and respond appropriately. Giving parents permission to grieve sufficiently will ease their loss and promote healing.

Avoid negative comments and isolation. Actions that denote this type of behavior do not bring about any positivity and makes things much worse.
